There are still some critters in our garden, but we have not seen a hedgehog since June.  All the hog did was to put in an appearance, go into the box to eat, and then clear off.  Not very interesting!

We get plenty of squirrels, which are not encouraged.  We also have had many more rats than of late.  They don’t do any real harm, and probably are faintly useful in that they like to dig tunnels in the compost heap, which together with my efforts to break up the tunnels, does a good job turning the heap.  However, being rats “They have got to go!”  Now, it is expensive poisoning rats (I reckon about £5 to knock off one rat), but I have found that my trusty “T-REX” Rat-trap (shown here on the right) to be very efficacious.  Baited with a morsel of fried bacon-rind, it has proved to be irresistible.  After we came back from Italy I got 3 rats in 3 days!  Lately, things have quietened down.  The 1 metre length of chain is an essential addition to ensure that a vandalistic rat cannot make off with the trap!  Oh, it also gets mice!  The pic shows a corner of one of my two compost heaps, which also have lids to keep the rain (and birds) off.

Now, as we are short on critters this year, how about a Christmas puzzle?
